What is a gummy smile?

Does your gummy smile concern you? Or embarrass you? Maybe we can help!

A smile is considered a gummy when the appearance of the upper teeth is overshadowed by an excessive amount of gum tissue.

Sometimes, a gummy smile can be unaesthetic as the upper front teeth appear too short compared to the number of gums displayed.

What causes a gummy smile?
Hypermobile upper lip. This is when your upper lip rises higher than normal due to a very strong muscle pull.

Abnormal eruption of teeth. This could be delayed active or delayed passive eruption.

Skeletal deformity. Excessive size of the maxilla (in the vertical dimension).

What are your treatment options?

Botox injection for the hypermobile lip.
Esthetic anterior crown lengthening for abnormal eruption patterns.

Surgical lip repositioning.
The procedure

Your gummy smile treatment depends on your diagnosis.

SmileCrafters Dental® Surgical Interventions:

Anterior crown lengthening

Local anesthesia will be given. Precise measurements of the final desired length of your teeth will be made and the tissue will be sculpted in a minimally invasive fashion to create a more beautiful and harmonious smile with less gum displayed.

Surgical lip repositioning

Local anesthesia will be given. The extent of the surgical site will be marked.

Healing can now commence. The goal of the procedure is to limit the retraction of the lip elevator muscles, thereby reduces the gummy display.
How can I request an appointment?

Patients With Dental Benefits (Assignment)

For your added convenience, we will bill your insurance directly if your plan allows for “assignment”.

Assignment of insurance is when the patient signs a section of the insurance forms which allows the dentist to receive the treatment fee directly from the insurance companies.

Please provide us with your booklet of benefits/rundown of your plan and student I.D. for any dependents under your plan (if applicable).

SmileCrafters™ Dental will attempt to contact your benefits administrator to inquire on the status of your claim.

We will notify you if your benefits administrator requires you to personally inquire about your claim.

Please note that you are responsible for any portion of the fees not covered under your plan (i.e. deductible, co-payment, the difference in fee guide) on the day that treatment is rendered.

Patients With Dental Benefits (No Assignment)

For your added convenience, will help you fill out any forms your dental benefits provider requires for the reimbursement of some or all of the costs of your dental treatment.

You are responsible for the full cost of treatment on the date treatment is provided.

Please note that a 30-day post-dated cheque is acceptable for non-assignment patients.

Patients With ODSP Coverage

We accept the ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) insurance.

Please present your dental benefits card (current month) on the day of the appointment, otherwise you are responsible to pay in full on the day of treatment.

Please note that you are responsible to sign a claim form at each appointment for treatment rendered for you or your dependent(s).

Patients Without Dental Benefits

For your convenience, SmileCrafters™ Dental accepts the following credit cards and payment methods:

Please note that you are responsible for the entire fee on the day treatment is rendered, unless written financial arrangements have been made.

What is a wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars.

Wisdom teeth complete their development between the ages of 16 to 20.

In most people, the jaw is too small to accommodate the wisdom teeth.

When inadequate space prevents wisdom teeth from erupting, they are called impacted.

What are the benefits of wisdom teeth extractions?

Decreased risk of inflammation and infections. Wisdom teeth frequently become impacted or stuck behind the second molars.

This makes it difficult to brush in the area. As a result, oral hygiene suffers, leading to plaque buildup, inflammation, infections, decay, gum disease and potential loss of the second molars.
Decreased risks of cysts and damage to the jaw and adjacent teeth.

Cysts or tumors may form around impacted wisdom teeth. These lesions can cause damage to adjacent teeth, your jaw bone or anatomic structures.

Decreased potential for teeth crowding. The pressure from erupting wisdom teeth may result in crowding of your other teeth and as a result, affect the alignment of your teeth.

SmileCrafters Dental® Wisdom Teeth Treatment Approach:

Removal of all four wisdom teeth (if present) is highly recommended during the teenage years.

The procedure – SmileCrafters Dental Brantford Ontario

Clinical examination

An oral exam is completed and a panoramic x-ray is taken.

This will help evaluate the position of your wisdom teeth and determine whether their extraction is necessary.

Your provider will discuss the risks and benefits of extraction of your wisdom teeth and perform a sedation consultation.

Patients can choose whether or not to have their wisdom teeth extractions done under IV sedation, oral sedation and laughing gas, or just with local anesthetic and no sedation.

SmileCrafters Dental – Brantford Ontario Canada

We highly recommend patients be sedated prior to wisdom teeth extractions.

Most patients opt for sedation and do not remember anything from their surgery visit.

After sedation starts, your upper and lower jaw will be anesthetized, the wisdom teeth will be removed, and the area of extraction will be sutured.

Patients will recover from sedation in our clinic, then go home with their escort (any person over the age of 18 that can safely drive the patient home after the procedure and care for the patient for the first few hours after surgery).

How long does the procedure typically take?

Your wisdom teeth procedure typically takes about 90 minutes.

This includes time for administration of local anesthetic, IV sedatives, and recovery from sedation.

How can I request an appointment?

If your wisdom teeth are causing problems for you, you do not need a referral for treatment.

We will be happy to see you for a FREE wisdom teeth extraction consultation.
